Eamonn Holmes condemns racism against “heroic” Marcus Rashford and other England players

Eamonn Holmes has called the treatment of England football player Marcus Rashford “abhorrent” as he calls for those involved in racist comments to be held accountable.

The broadcaster took to social media to share his opinion on the racist abuse targeting Rashford and his England teammates Bukayo Saka and Jadon Sancho following England’s Euro 2020 loss on Sunday.

Posting a clip of himself reading a statement from Rashford on Tuesday’s episode of This Morning, Eamonn branded the 23-year-old an “extraordinary young man”.

Alongside the video, Eamonn wrote: “Racism is never, ever acceptable. The abuse @marcusrashford and some of his @england teammates suffered after the final is abhorrent and more needs to be done to hold these people accountable for their actions.

“Marcus, on and off the pitch has been heroic. A true role model and inspiration and his words yet again, even at this tough time speak volumes of him as a person.”

Eamonn’s reaction to the Manchester United footballers statement comes after a mural painted in Rashford’s childhood hometown of Withington in Manchester was vandalised with obscenities less than an hour after missing his penalty against Italy in the final.

The local community gathered in a Stand Against Racism vigil at the mural to cover the abuse with notes dedicated to Rashford to which he responsed that he was “overwhelmed” and “lost for words”.

Eamonn’s comments on the issue come as he and his partner Ruth took to the screens on Tuesday for their second appearance on ITV’s this morning as the married duo replace Phil and Holly who are on their summer break.
