Eamonn Holmes has revealed he came off his medication for chronic pain so he could return to This Morning.

The This Morning host returned to the ITV show this week after struggling with back problems in recent weeks.

He took to Twitter last night to give himself a pep talk as he attempted to go to bed without any medication.

"Come on Eamonn, let's give this sleep a serious Go ..... Surely I can do this?" he tweeted.

"No medication during a working week but roll on Friday night. May you find an escape in sleep tonight . #ChronicPain Deep breath ....and relax.

"Goodnight Tweeters and thanks for being there."

Many fans commented on his tweet with their suggestions on how to ease the pain and bring on sleep.

"I use a cream for my chronic back pain," one user posted. "It's called capsaicin cream… it’s amazing."

Another commented: "Fingers crossed for you Eamonn that you'll get a good amount of sleep. Pity you can't take meds but understandable reason why. At least it's only one more, er, sleep, till Friday and then…"

The 61-year-old has been doing physiotherapy and recently revealed he had to undergo steroid injections in a bid to ease the chronic pain.

He also confessed he's been feeling exhausted as he continues to battle his chronic pain.

In an emotional message posted on Twitter , Eamonn apologised to his followers for not replying to more messages after he shared the happy news he's going to be a grandad.

Eamonn wrote: "I have been very bad at answering and acknowledging so many 'Grandpa' good wishes today.

"Please forgive and understand how draining and debilitating this back pain I'm suffering is. I'm drained.

"Had steroid injections today which will hopefully turn the tide.#ChronicPain."
