Eamonn Holmes breaks down as he pays emotional tribute to Ruth Langford's sister

Eamonn Holmes has paid an emotional tribute to his wife's sister who tragically died yesterday.

The presenter was in his usual Friday slot but without his wife Ruth Langsford who cancelled her TV appearances following the sad news her sister Julia Johnson had died after a long illness.

Eamonn broke down in tears as he read out Ruth's social media announcement speaking fondly of her sister, leaving Rylan to step in and continue as his voice broke.

The presenter revealed that Rylan was the first person he called after Ruth found out the news saying that he was a great support to his wife and their family.

Ruth, 59, had asked her followers for understanding as she announced she'd be taking a break from TV.

She was next due to be on screen alongside her husband Eamonn today as the duo usually present This Morning on Fridays.

However, Eamonn explained that Ruth was watching from home instead.

"You may already be aware of the terrible bereavement that Ruth has had yesterday," he said.

"No one understands more than Rylan who has been a great comfort to Ruth and has stepped in today," Eamonn said.

"Rylan was the first person who we phoned when I heard the news, he is a great support," he added.

Ruth shared the tragic news on Instagram , posting a gorgeous picture of her and her sister together.

She said: "My lovely Sis Julia has sadly died after a very long illness. My heart is completely broken. She was the kindest and most gentle soul and I will miss her forever. As I am sure you will appreciate I need to take time to grieve with my family. Thank you for your understanding."

Julia was 62 when she was found dead at home.
