Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford bow out of This Morning after 15 years of Fridays

Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford are hosting their final Friday episode of This Morning.

It was announced recently that the husband-and-wife duo were being replaced in the slot they've presented for the last 15 years by Alison Hammond and Dermot O'Leary.

Marking the poignant day, Eamonn took to Instagram to share a snap of himself and Ruth collecting a National Television Award for the show.

He captioned it: "We bow out of 15 years of our Friday slot on This Morning today. Thanks for the memories hope we made some for you too. Until February May it be a Happy Christmas to you all."

Dermot took to the comments section to tell them he was honoured to be taking over.

He penned: "Masterclass. Humbled to be in your wake."

TOWIE's Jess Wright told them: "you will so be missed love you both!!"

And I'm A Celebrity champ Vicky Pattison wrote: "You will be sorely missed! #legends"

While presenter Kate Thornton commented: "Fridays won’t be the same without you. Huge love and respect to you both x"

News that the couple were being axed from the show was met with some backlash from viewers.

Eamonn and Ruth were said to be "furious and upset" about the axe when it was revealed by The Mirror.

They will still step in to cover main hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield when they're on holiday.

Alison has been part of the This Morning "family" for years as a roving reporter and has been a firm favourite with fans.

She and former X Factor presenter Dermot have hosted the ITV show together before, stepping in as stand-in presenters and bosses had been impressed by their chemistry.

An insider said: "They have real warmth. It's time for a change and they are perfect.

"Eamonn is pretty furious and everyone feels for him and Ruth, they are well liked on the team, but sometimes tough decisions have to be made."

Meanwhile, Holly and Phil have headed off on their annual Christmas break.

They'll be back to appear in a special pre-recorded episode to air on Christmas Day for the first time ever.

* This Morning airs weekdays from 10am on ITV
