Eamon Dunphy wants to see England 'suffer' in Euro 2020 final against Italy

Eamon Dunphy has joked that he wants to see England 'suffer' in this Sunday's Euro 2020 final against Italy.

The legendary broadcaster was on Virgin Media's Tonight Show on Thursday evening and said that he hopes the trophy is going to Rome rather than 'Coming Home'.

England secured safe passage to Sunday's final with a 2-1 extra time win over Denmark on Wednesday and Dunphy said that although he has no problem with the English people he would still like to see the Italians win the tie.

He said: "I think I'm like most Irish people. We love English football. We're very engaged with English football and I've nothing against English people but, and it's a big but, when they get into a situation like this their media really go crazy and for them it's about proving they were right to do Brexit and all of this stuff.

"It's the carry on afterwards that I object to more than the players or Gareth Southgate.

"Imagine what it will be like on Monday morning with their supremacy ideas so I'm hoping Italy will do them and I think a lot of people are like that too so it is a mixed emotion. "

And the podcast host said that although he is a fan of the English players and Gareth Southgate, he does not want to see them be crowned European Champions.

"That's the problem, the players are fine people and Raheem Sterling grew up in the shadows of Wembley Stadium in very poor circumstances. Gareth Southgate is the perfect English gentleman.

"The problem is the others, the people who booed the German national anthem, they were booing Denmark's last night and there's also the English media and what they will make of it and it's just a bit too much for all of us to take so I want to see them suffer a little bit and I hope Italy can do the job. "

And Dunphy also added that Irish fans carry themselves better than their English counterparts.

He said: "I think our fans would never boo a visiting team's national anthem. Our fans are friendly, for us it is about friendship.

"The spirit is to enjoy yourself and not to be triumphalist and it's the spirit of the English fans and the English media that are really unbearable. We watch sports to enjoy it and to engage with it and not to be reminded of how wonderful England is."
