Eagles will not franchise-tag Nick Foles, allowing QB to hit free agency

The Philadelphia Eagles will not apply a franchise tag to backup quarterback Nick Foles, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, making him a free agent when the league year begins March 13.

Foles, a former Super Bowl MVP and leader of successful playoff trips the past two seasons, will have the ability to choose his next destination. He began to build a strong resume for being a marquee free agent this offseason in 2017 when he led the top-seeded Eagles to an upset in Super Bowl LII after replacing an injured Carson Wentz.

This season, Foles repeated his late-season magic, helping lead the 4-6 Eagles back into the playoffs and nearly the NFC championship game. However, with Wentz coming back, Philadelphia opted to move on from Foles and will now look to a cheaper No. 2 option.

Following Schefter’s report, Eagles vice president of football operations Howie Roseman said the following at the NFL combine in Indianapolis:

The rumors linking Foles to Jacksonville were already gaining momentum but now appear to be stronger.

Head coach Doug Marrone and the Jaguars have a decision to make. Do they want to sign Foles, a proven veteran, for over $20 million or take a risk on Dwayne Haskins or Kyler Murray?

The next few weeks are going to be very interesting in Jacksonville with current quarterback Blake Bortles’ future as a Jaguar in jeopardy.
