Eagles vs. Commanders: 10 stats to know for Week 4

After a blowout loss to the Bills last week, the Washington Commanders are heading to Philadelphia to take on the Eagles in an intriguing NFC East matchup.

The last time these two teams met at Lincoln Financial Field, Washington handed Philadelphia their first regular season loss in Week 10 with a 32-21 win.

Teams are looking to dictate pace to Jalen Hurts, and that’s meant an increase in pressure from the opposition.

Through the first three games of season, Jalen Hurts has been blitzed 51 times — the second-most of any quarterback in the NFL according to Zach Berman.

That’s 19 more than last season at this point, and it shows how desperate teams are to get the All-Pro quarterback off his square, or making mistakes.

Philadelphia has dynamic weapons on the outside, but this team will return to the Super Bowl thanks to a dominant offensive line that has no weakness among the five starters.

In Reuben Frank’s latest observations, the Eagles are outrushing teams at a pace not seen since the league’s inception.

The Eagles out-rushed the Vikings by 231 yards (259 to 28) and the Bucs by 160 yards (201-41). This is the first time in 73 years they’ve had consecutive games with a rushing margin of at least 160 yards. Last time it happened was vs. the Rams on Oct. 7 and Colts on Oct. 15 in 1950 – a 172-yard margin vs. the Rams [298-126] and 189 yards vs. the Colts [254-65]. With a 160-yard rushing margin and a 138-yard passing margin in Tampa, this was only the second time since 1954 the Eagles have outgained a team by at least 135 yards both rushing and passing. They also did it on Nov. 15, 1981, in a 38-13 win over the Colts at the Vet.

Swift ranks second in the NFL with 308 rushing yards, trailing only Christian McCaffrey (353) in the category. According to Eagles media guru John Gonoude, Swift leads NFL running backs in rushing first downs (16, tied), rushing first-down percentage (35.6%) and yards per carry (6.8) (min. 30 attempts).

The former Georgia All-America is on an All-Pro path through three games.

Carter is tied for the league lead with two forced fumbles and he ranks T-8th with 15 pressures, which is 2nd among all NFL defensive tackles, behind the guy he replaced, Javon Hargrave (18).

In Week 3 at Tampa Bay, Carter had 5 pressures, 2 FFs, 1 QB hit and 0.5 sacks, becoming the first rookie defensive tackle to post 2 FFs in a game since Karl Klug with Tennessee in 2011.

The Eagles lead the league in rushing defense, allowing just 48.3 yards per game.

That is the club’s fewest rushing yards surrendered through three games since 2008 (45.7 ypg allowed).

Philadelphia is the only NFL team to record multiple takeaways in each of the first three games of the 2023 campaign. The Eagles rank T-3rd in the NFL in takeaways (7), behind Buffalo (9) and Pittsburgh (8).
