Eagles’ secondary named the teams biggest weakness

The Philadelphia Eagles enter the 2019 NFL season loaded at several positions and are among a handful of teams capable of hoisting the Lombardi Trophy in February. ESPN.com and Pro Football Focus gave the Birds an above average grade for their roster, but like every team in the NFL, there are some concerns.

The Eagles talented but the inconsistent secondary has been named the teams biggest witness.

Biggest weakness:

The Eagles basically fielded a group of off-the-street defensive backs last season after injuries ravaged their secondary. Depth at the position is still lacking, which mirrors the shortage of quality defensive backs in the league as a whole. Their likely starters — Ronald Darby, Jalen Mills, and Sidney Jones — finished last season by allowing 62.0, 65.3 and 67.4% of passes thrown in their direction to be caught, respectively. They’ll have to stay healthy and improve for the Eagles to field a top-half coverage unit.

The “off the street” label is a bit harsh, but this was a unit that saw a double-digit list of different corners all get time in the secondary. With Ronald Darby returning from injury and Avonte Maddox emerging, this group should become a strength of the team by seasons end.
