The bulk of the 2020 NFL offseason has been centered around whether or not the Philadelphia Eagles need to add another running back to the roster.
The Eagles currently have Miles Sanders, Boston Scott, Corey Clement, Elijah Holyfield, Adrian Killins, and Michael Warren on the roster.
With several veteran free agent running backs available on the open market, the discussions have centered around finding a complimentary piece to fit with second-year running back Miles Sanders.
Sanders believes he can be a workhorse back for the Eagles and during a recent workout, he referenced his 2020 MVP goals loudly.
The numbers from Sanders rookie year and the offensive additions suggest that the former Penn State star should have a monster 2020 season.
Sanders amassed 1,327 yards from scrimmage and six touchdowns as a rookie while splitting time with Jordan Howard. After Howard left the lineup with a pinched nerve, Sanders flourished, mixing explosive plays in with tough running.
When Sanders needed a breather late last season, it was Boston Scott who used the reps to prove that he belongs in the NFL. Until a veteran is officially signed, the late-season look will likely be the status quo with Corey Clement, Killins and Warren mixed in.
Look for the Eagles to allow Sanders to be the workhorse, utilizing schemes and formations that’ll prevent the running back from getting worn down.
Sanders is going to be used in the running game, the passing game, and the dangerous screen game that allows the Eagles to flourish.
With DeSean Jackson and Alshon Jeffery returning on the outside and the additions of Marquise Goodwin, Quez Watkins, John Hightower, and Jalen Reagor, teams won’t be able to stack the box on Sanders either.
The Eagles pass to set up the run, so look for Doug Pederson and company to get Sanders involved on all three downs. If Pederson can step away from his running back by committee approach and find creative and efficient ways to utilize Sanders like the Panthers use Christian McCaffery, the second-year back could have a monster season.
