The New York Giants took care of their two top pieces of internal business on Tuesday, signing quarterback Daniel Jones to a four-year extension and placing the franchise tag on star running back Saquon Barkley.
Giants general manager Joe Schoen, who has done a masterful job digging out of the abysmal hole he inherited from his predecessor, Dave Gettleman, managed to bring Jones into the fold with a reasonable cap number for this year ($18.5 million) and will work on lowering Barkley’s number going forward.
That will leave the Giants with enough cap space (up to $27 million once they cut Kenny Golladay) to be a player in free agency.
That, apparently, isn’t enough to impress some NFC East beat writers, however. Specifically Eagles reporter Eliot Shorr-Parks.

That remains to be seen. The Eagles are likely due for an exodus of veterans this offseason and they have only $5.5 million in available cap space to work with.
They also lost both coordinators. The Giants kept both of theirs.
The Giants can close the gap on Philadelphia with a strong showing in free agency and the draft this spring. How Shorr-Parks can forecast what each team will be this season at this point in time is strictly his opinion, speculation.
