Eagles offense ranked in middle of the pack despite receiving core that leads NFL in drops

Carson Wentz is having one of his most efficient seasons as a signal-caller and if not for some shaky performances from the skill positions, he could be mentioned in MVP conversations. Pro Football Focus recently ranked every NFL offense through six weeks, using a formula called expected pointed added.

The formula grades out using (EPA – the expected number of points the offense should expect to score on the next scoring play given the down, distance, and field position). With that grading formula, PFF was able to rank all 32 offenses by EPA.

Despite the Birds leading the NFL in drops, the offense still landed in the middle of the pack of offensive rankings.

15. PHILADELPHIA EAGLES
Despite what the box scores say, quarterback Carson Wentz has been lights out in 2019 with an elite 90.6 overall grade (second only to Russell Wilson). The bigger issue with the Eagles’ offense is in their receiving unit that is underperforming. Wentz has dealt with 17 drops thus far, which is the most any quarterback has had this season. In addition, this receiving unit that is littered with talent has been horrendous in contested-catch situations, hauling in just 33.3% of their contested targets (27th). If Philly’s receiving unit can clean up their act, Wentz and head coach Doug Pederson can lead this offense to an even better ranking.

The eventual return of DeSean Jackson, coupled with an increased level of concentration while catching the ball should prove valuable for the Eagles receiving corp, thus making the overall offense and Carson Wentz even more efficient.

The top ten offenses were listed in order:

10. SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS

9. OAKLAND RAIDERS

8. ARIZONA CARDINALS

7. MINNESOTA VIKINGS

6. INDIANAPOLIS COLTS

5. ATLANTA FALCONS

4. HOUSTON TEXANS

3. BALTIMORE RAVENS

2. DALLAS COWBOYS

1. KANSAS CITY CHIEFS
