Eagles OC Mike Groh defends Nelson Agholor’s effort

Nelson Agholor has a staunch supporter in Eagles offensive coordinator Mike Groh, who on Tuesday, defended his embattled wide receiver amid criticism that he didn’t try on a deep ball from Carson Wentz on Sunday night.

Agholor has faced heavy criticism for his inability to reel in deep balls this season and the noise reached a fever pitch on Sunday night after the Eagles star appeared to short-arm a deep pass from Wentz that he could have laid out for.

Groh, the Eagles offensive coordinator, spoke with the media Tuesday afternoon and defended Agholor’s effort on the play.

“I thought he gave tremendous effort, played with great speed down the field. I thought he located the ball, maybe a little bit later in the down than we would like, and it made it a difficult — because he located it late, he wasn’t able to catch up to it. Had he located it sooner, maybe he would’ve taken a little bit of a different course and would’ve been there.

Groh went on to say that Agholor’s effort shouldn’t be questioned, stating that the wideout “poured his heart and soul into this team” over the past five years, and has done everything he’s ever been asked to do.

When asked if there was anything quarterback Carson Wentz could have done better on the throw, Groh referenced the pressure his signal-caller was under but believes he delivered a catchable ball on the play.
