Eagles news: Fletcher Cox set to retire; C.J. Gardner-Johnson set for a return to Philadelphia?

Philadelphia is set for a retool, and GM Howie Roseman has the assets to add a dynamic player to a revamped roster.

The Eagles have their first-round draft pick, No. 22 overall, plus a pair of second-round picks (Nos. 50 and 53), giving them three selections among the first 53 draft picks. Altogether, the Birds have eight picks and are expected to have another four compensatory picks from the league, which could include an additional third-round pick.

Philadelphia’s has some roster decisions on players like Haason Reddick and Darius Slay, but the biggest news could focus on a legend’s departure, and a fiery defenders return.

With the final day of the NFL combine set, Jeremy Fowler reports that Fletcher Cox is “closer” to retirement, while C.J. Gardner-Johnson could return to the Birds.

Adam Schefter previously reported that Jason Kelce and Fletcher Cox were leaning towards retirement after a disappointing NFC wild card loss.

Jeremy Fowler reports that Cox’s position hasn’t changed after more than a month to think about his future.

C.J. Gardner-Johnson

Detroit Lions safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson (2) waves at the crowd during the second half against Seattle Seahawks at Ford Field in Detroit on Sunday, Sept. 17, 2023.

Last off-season, Eagles GM Howie Roseman essentially chose James Bradberry over C.J. Gardner-Johnson, with the talented safety taking his talents and Philadelphia’s swagger with him to Detroit.

A C.J. Gardner-Johnson reunion in Philadelphia is on my radar. The Eagles realized they missed the talented safety in the secondary. Tennessee makes sense for him, too. Titans defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson is a big fan of Gardner-Johnson from their Philly days.

Jeremy Fowler reports that Roseman is looking for a do-over, and Gardner-Johnson could return to Philadelphia.

Quinyon Mitchell

The Eagles have a pressing need at the cornerback position, and Ed Kracz of Sports Illustrated reports that Howie Roseman could trade up for a shot to land Toledo’s Quinyon Mitchell.

“I do not rule out trading up with Howie Roseman,” a scout told SI Eagles Today. “Quinyon Mitchell could be the guy in that scenario.”

Over the past two years, Mitchell earned elite coverage grades with an astounding 35 forced incompletions, six interceptions and even eight more dropped picks.

Mitchell is an outstanding athlete who makes plays with his burst and ball skills on the backend.

Mitchell had six interceptions and 37 pass breakups over the past two years.
