Eagles’ Nathan Gerry hoping added weight gain will lead to role at middle LB

There’s definitely a role for Nate Gerry in this new hybrid NFL, that’ll have 5 wideouts on the field and six or seven defensive backs at a time. For Gerry its simply about finding a role in the Eagles vaunted defense.

After an offseason of weight gain and bulking up, Gerry told Mike Kaye of NJ.com that he’s hoping his experience in Jim Schwartz system can give him an edge over, L.J. Fort and Zach Brown.

“It helps that it’s going to be my third year here,” Gerry said Wednesday. “I know the defense a lot more, I’m a lot more comfortable going into all of these camps. I play a lot faster, which helps me.”

Gerry has reportedly bulked up to about 235 pounds, 20 pounds heavier than his playing weight from last season. Such a gain should help Gerry hold up better against the run.

“I kind of wanted to be a little bit bigger,” Gerry said. “Obviously, last year, I played a bit of the MIKE position, and was a lot more inside. That’s what I’m doing right now, a lot of inside stuff, so I wanted to get a bit more size.”

If Gerry can maintain his speed and quickness, while still being a viable defender against the run, there could be a place for the former Nebraska safety on this deep and experienced Eagles defense.
