Eagles HC Doug Pederson could give Press Taylor ‘more’ play-calling responsibility vs. the Packers

With Carson Wentz struggling and Doug Pederson fighting for his job, the Eagles head coach hinted on Tuesday at relinquishing some of the play-calling duties.

Jeff McLane of The Inquirer is reporting that Pederson has quietly ceded some of the Eagles play-calling to Rich Scangarello and Press Taylor in recent weeks.

With the Eagles needing a positive offensive performance, McLane is reporting that Pederson could give the Eagles passing game coordinator even more responsibility against the Packers.

Doug Pederson said Tuesday that giving up his offensive play-calling duties was “on the table,” but the Eagles coach has already doled out some to assistants, NFL sources told The Inquirer.

Pederson has handed the reins over to pass game coordinator Press Taylor several times in recent games and could give him more responsibility starting Sunday in Green Bay, according to the sources. Senior offensive assistant Rich Scangarello has also been calling plays, specifically in two-minute situations, since the beginning of the season.

Scangarello has actually been a play-caller for the Broncos in 2019 and the results were lack-luster for a Denver offense that quickly made a change.

The Eagles have lost three in a row and with the Packers having the NFL’s highest-scoring offense, Pederson can’t afford another stagnant offensive performance at Lambeau Field.

Taylor was considered one of the top young minds in the NFL in recent years, but Wentz’s regression coupled with the lack of innovation in the Eagles offense has some yearning for Duce Staley to get that nod from Pederson.
