The Eagles wanted to get back to drafting developmental quarterbacks, and they found one in the fifth round by drafting Northwestern quarterback Clayton Thorson with the No. 167 overall pick.
Thorson, 23, was a four-year starter for the Wildcats who started 53 career games. He threw for 3,183 yards, 17 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions last season. In his career, he had had 61 touchdowns and 45 interceptions and his team's record was 36-17. He's considered a good athlete for the position, although an ankle injury in their bowl game kept him from participating in the combine.
The Eagles have not drafted a quarterback since Carson Wentz in 2016. After Nick Foles left in free agency, there's a spot on the depth chart for another passer. Nate Sudfeld is expected to be the No. 2, although he's entering the final year of his contract. Thorson could develop into eventual No. 2 if he lasts with the Eagles.
