Phillip Daniels was a pretty physical pass rusher in his day, capable of getting after it with the best of them, so when the new defensive line coach for the Eagles hands out praise, you should probably listen. The former defensive end, and now NFL assistant coach has grown impressed by Miller, the Philadelphia native the Eagles drafted out of Penn State in the fourth round.
Miller lasted on the board a lot longer than some expected, but if you ask Daniel’s, the rookie is going to be a pretty good player. Daniel’s sat down with the media recently and told Penn Live that Shareef Miller has all the traits that make up a great defensive end.
“I’ve been pleased with him,” Daniels said. “Young guy coming into a new situation for a team like this that’s been successful and got a lot of successful guys around you, and those guys are helping him. Our D-ends are reaching out to him, helping him out, and that’s what it’s about. We all help each other get better, but I’m pleased with where he’s at.”
“The first trait that you want to see in a guy is being smart,” Daniels said. “He’s a smart player, and then you want a guy that can run. In our defense you have to run as ends because we have to close and run down the line and make tackles down the line, and that’s what you got to do. … If you can run, you almost there where you need to be.”
Miller will need to get stronger at the point of attack and faces an uphill battle steal playing time on a team that’s already filled with quality pass rushers.
