The Philadelphia Eagles entered the 2019 NFL season hell-bent on correcting many of the mistakes that cost games and big leads last season. Although the Birds have still struggled to produce offense in the first quarter of games, they’ve improved leaps and bounds on third downs.
The Eagles are among the best in the NFL on fourth down, and now this season, they’re currently the No. 1 team on third down entering week five of the regular season.
During his press conference on Wednesday morning, Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz stated that “they have been working at that since the offseason” and guys are now making plays.
During the 2017 season in which Wentz was the front-runner for MVP before tearing his ACL, the Eagles star was the best in the NFL on third downs, going 81 of 124 for 1,178 yards, 14 touchdowns and three interceptions on third down according to Sports Info Solutions.
Those numbers dropped last season, and the Eagles dropped to 11th in the NFL as well. The Philadelphia Eagles go as Carson Wentz does on third downs, and that means the team will always have success on the most important down in football.
