Eagle-eyed radio fans spot Rishi Sunak's new mug after criticism over £180 cup

Rishi Sunak prepared for the Budget last night with a cuppa from a Capital Radio mug.

He shunned his previous £180 Bluetooth temperature control mug which became the focus of criticism last July after he posed with it.

In the traditional photographs posted on Twitter the night before, eagle-eyed radio fans spotted that he had a much less expensive mug this year, with a Capital Radio logo.

The Chancellor has previously said that prefers Capital FM to Radio 4's Today programme - but people on Twitter were left confused by the photo.

One person tweeted: "Check out that @CapitalOfficial mug @romankemp," along with a laughing emoji.

Another commented: "Excellent mug choice tho," and a third added: "Ummm, why the capital breakfast mug???"

Others joked about the lack of fizzy drinks in the photo after Mr Sunak previously described his love of Mexican Coca-Cola.

Old footage which went viral yesterday captured the Chancellor describing himself as a "coke addict" before rushing to clarify what he meant.

During the clip, Mr Sunak told a pair of teenage boys: "I'm a coke addict. A total coke addict"

He then quickly added: "Coca-Cola addict. For the record. Just to be totally clear. I am a Coca-Cola addict. I have seven fillings to show for it.

In the photo posted last night, HM Treasury added: "Ahead of #Budget2021 tomorrow, the Chancellor @RishiSunak today had a traditional pre-budget audience with the Queen."

One person jokily commented: "Oh great, now the Queen is caught up on trying Mexican coke."

Another tweeted: "I wonder if his office has a Coke Button like Donald Trump's Oval Office did."

Others wondered about the range of cards set out behind the Chancellor - whose birthday isn't until May.

One social media user joked: "Which poor intern had to buy, write and place those cards... as if at random."
