Eagle-eyed person spots dangerous situation on Waterford beach as Coast Guard helicopter speeds to scene

An Irish Coast Guard helicopter was sprung into action on Wednesday afternoon when a swimmer was spotted in trouble in Waterford.

A passerby noticed a person struggling in the water near Bonmahon and raised the alarm with emergency services.

Rescue 117 was immediately tasked to the scene and was overhead within minutes.

Luckily the swimmer was able to pull themselves ashore as the helicopter arrived and they were given first aid treatment by the crew.

They were brought to a Waterford University Hospital as a precaution.

A Rescue 117 spokesperson said: "Tasking today to an incident near Bonmahon. A swimmer in difficulty that was able to make it back ashore as the services arrived on-scene.

"A speedy response with great interagency cooperation with Bonmahon Coast Guard unit, Helvick Head RNLI and National Ambulance Service insured the patient was brought to hospital as a precaution.

"Thank you to the member of public that called for help. Remember if you see someone in trouble in or near the water call 112 or 999 and ask for the Coast Guard."
