Eagle-eyed Happy Valley viewer makes brilliant observation about "incredible" Sarah Lancashire in throwback photo

The determined and resilient Sergeant Catherine Cawood has been hailed as a "superhero" by fans for her actions in the BBC One drama. The character, played by Oldham-born Sarah Lancashire, received the Queen's police medal for bravery for capturing the psychopath killer Tommy Lee Royce on a narrow boat after he abducted Ann Gallagher and murdering police officer Kirsten McAskill and more in series one.

As well as serving the West Yorkshire community of Calder Valley, she has been bringing up her grandson Ryan, now 16, since his mother tragically took her own life after she was raped by evil Tommy. After fighting to keep Ryan away from his dad, Catherine's world has since come crashing down when she found out that her sister Clare Cartwright and her boyfriend Neil Ackroyd had been taking Ryan to visit him in prison in Sheffield.

After gripping scenes on Sunday night (January 22), which saw Tommy bolt for freedom from court while facing standing trial for another murder, the Twitter page @QueenLancashire shared a photo of BAFTA award-winning actress Sarah with the ABBA tribute band Swede Dreamz. Fans will recall that Catherine and her colleagues Ann and Joyce went to see the band in series two after Ann joined the police following her kidnap and rape ordeal.

The tweet read "Throwback to when ABBA met Catherine (Sarah)", and one eagle-eyed fan was praised as they made an observation. @mrseleanorohara pointed out: "That first picture looks like sarah dressed as catherine, not catherine, it's MAD how her physicality creates the character too."

@QueenLancashire replied: "1000% Annie! Never thought of this. They added: "It’s so obviously Sarah in Catherine’s clothes. Probably the great big beam on her face too. (We rarely get that from our Cath these days haha)." @MoyraGough agreed: "That's a really good observation. Spot on!" And @telsah01 replied: "I want a check shirt."

Fans have flocked to praise former Coronation Street star Sarah on her powerful portrayal of grief-stricken Catherine. @AllisonJaneSmi2 said: "I’m a late converter #happyvalley Easily my favourite thing on the box right now."

They added: "Superb script, brilliant cast & incredible acting, especially Sarah Lancashire. For me, it’s right up there with Line of Duty."

@MissJonesCat tweeted: "Finally catching up on #HappyValley - what an incredible actress Sarah Lancashire is." And @paulfinn3 wrote: "I've never been a soap opera fan but Sarah Lancashire is immense in Happy Valley.

"I've watched it from the start but only just started the new series and wish I hadn't until I could watch it in one go. Some people should be on telly or movies more #sarahlancashire."

Catherine, 58, shot to fame in 1991 as bubbly Raquel Wolstenhulme, a supermarket colleague of Curly Watts who went on to become his wife. The stage and screen actress has also gone on to win a clutch of awards for her role as headteacher Caroline McKenzie-Dawson in the BBC One series Last Tango in Halifax, also penned by Happy Valley creator Sally Wainwright.
