Women's basketball will be featured in a video game for the first time this fall, when Electronic Arts includes WNBA players in NBA Live '18.
The game is "only a taste of what we have in store" now that the company has partnered with the league, NBA Live Executive Producer Sean O'Brien said in a press release.
"The WNBA is home to some of the most incredible athletes on the planet and we have been working hard to integrate them into our game in an authentic and meaningful way," he said.
NBA Live, which is built in Maitland, Fla., has been released every year since 1994 but this will mark the first time the game includes the WNBA.
"We are delighted to make history with EA," WNBA President Lisa Borders said. "With EA's expertise and ingenuity, the game will provide a terrific platform to showcase the players and the league, enabling fans to experience the WNBA in a new, exciting way."
Electronic Arts conducted head scans of the league's stars and held motion capture sessions with several players, including the 2017 WNBA draft's first overall pick, San Antonio Stars point guard Kelsey Plum.
The game will be available worldwide in September for Xbox One and PlayStation 4, with a demo being released Aug. 11.
"We believe that combining technology and entertainment is a powerful way to not only recognize and value our brand of basketball, but to also increase fan connectivity and engagement," WNBA Players Association president and L.A. Sparks forward Nneka Ogwumike said.
