EA Sports FC 27 defending, runs, and passing updates explained

EA Sports FC 27 has revealed its gameplay details. Instead of letting AI teammates do the heavy lifting, the game shifts the focus to manual defending, smarter runs, and more intentional passing.

Here’s everything you need to know about EA FC 27 gameplay.

Quick Summary

  • FC 27 reduces AI auto-defending and interception reach, rewarding manual defending.
  • Manual jockeying and stand tackles are buffed.
  • Attacking runs become smarter and more curved.
  • Through passes and dinked passes follow your aim more strictly.
  • Precision and power control are more important than before.

How AI defending changes in EA Sports FC 27

In FC 27, AI defending has been cut down. This includes auto-tackles and interception reach from AI-controlled players and focuses more on positioning.

Previously, if a dribbler came close enough to an AI defender, the game fired off an automatic tackle and won the ball without you pressing anything. Now, those defenders rely more on their body shape and line. They only pick up loose balls or punish attackers running straight into them.

AI interceptions are also toned down, with reduced reach compared to FC 26. A manually controlled player can reach further into lanes.

Manual defending has more tools now

To balance the AI nerfs, FC 27 buffs manual defending. Manually controlled defenders now have higher jockey speed than in FC 26. This makes it easier to mirror agile attackers and stay in front of quick direction changes.

On top of that, the range of manually triggered stand tackles is increased when compared to last year. If you read the dribbler correctly and step into the passing or dribbling lane, your tackle covers more ground and has a better chance of cleanly winning possession.

Teammate Contain has also been adjusted. When you call a second defender with Contain, they now mark the ball carrier from a slightly longer distance instead of closing in instantly.

FC 27 corner kicks and crosses now rely on timing

Corners are redesigned to give you more control over the moment before the ball arrives. Crosses are less assisted.

After you pick your target area on a corner, the camera shifts toward the box and opens a short control window. During that window, you can move attackers, switch players, start runs, shield, or use a new Avoidance mechanic to slip through crowded areas and fight for space. This change only applies to direct corners, so short corners still send you back to your usual gameplay camera once the ball is taken.

Free movement in the box is also more manual now. It’s on you to time runs, attack the right patch of grass, and get first contact. If you mistime that movement, the ball can fly past everyone, but when you nail it, finishes feel more varied and rewarding.

Crosses are reworked so they target space more often instead of locking onto a specific player. Aim and power have a much bigger influence on where the ball lands, so poor crosses can genuinely miss everyone.

Connecting cleanly with a header from corners or crosses is harder, so you’ll see fewer perfect contacts than in FC 26.

FC 27 attacking runs are smarter but limited

FC 27’s attacking AI gets a noticeable upgrade through Attacking Spatial Awareness. AI attackers are more aware of surrounding space and move into it with contextual curved runs.

You also get new manual options: Triggered Curved Runs and Pass & Follow Runs. A normal triggered run still sends a player forward on a direct path, but Triggered Curved Runs bend their movement into open space. This is useful for cutting around defenders or timing a run behind the back line. They take longer to complete because the path is longer and more curved.

Pass & Follow Runs work like an extension of Pass & Go. After playing a pass, the passer can follow up with a curved run, either overlapping or cutting inside depending on the situation. Importantly, FC 27 adds a cap to how far manually triggered runs can go. In previous games, you could trigger a run, move the ball far away, and still expect that player to keep sprinting forever.

Now, manually triggered runs only continue for a limited distance before the runner stops. If you want them to keep going, you need to stay within their range and trigger the command again.

Passing in FC 27 pushes precision over assistance

Through passes and dinked passes are both reworked. Ground and lobbed through passes now follow your directional input much more strictly.

This year, the ball goes where you point the stick, which means you need to be deliberate with your direction. Dinked passes, both ground and through, move to a fully manual system. They now heavily rely on how precisely you aim and how much power you add.

Across defending, runs, and passing, your decisions in FC 27 matter more than before. AI support is scaled back, and manual inputs have more impact.

Faster jockeying and longer tackle reach if you’re willing to switch and commit. In attack, you get more nuanced, curved runs but need to manage distance caps and re-trigger commands when needed. And in midfield, your passing game shifts from relying on hidden assistance to hitting honest, manual lines that defenders can actually read.

FAQs

How is defending different in EA Sports FC 27?

Defending is less automated, with AI doing positioning while manual jockeying and tackles carry most of the work.

How has attacking movement changed in EA FC 27?

Attacking movement now uses smarter curved runs and improved spatial awareness, but manually triggered runs stop sooner.

What are Triggered Curved Runs and Pass & Follow Runs?

They are new curved off-ball run commands that let you bend movement into space after a trigger or pass.

How have through passes and dinked passes changed in EA FC 27?

Through and dinked passes follow your aim more strictly and use fully manual input.
