E3 2014: Dead Island gets sequel as tropical zombies take flight to California

Hidden in Sony's E3 keynote last night was good new for fans of hunting the undead.

For publisher Deep Silver have announced the sequel to zombie-killing epic Dead Island.

A completely new and different game to last year's follow-up Dead Island Riptide, it was launched with a cheeky and enormously well made teaser.

Here's what we know.

It's by Yager

This game is being developed by Berlin-based Yager, who last did the critically-acclaimed Dubai-based shooter Spec Ops: The Line.

This is very, very good news. And it's running on the "Unreal Engine 4" for smashing gaming good looks.

The zombies have moved to California

As you can see from the utterly terrific teaser trailer, the game's been moved from a tropical island to America's West Coast. California, to be specific, from the Golden Gate bridge to Venice Beach.

So the zombies this time will be tanned, stuffed full of plastic and with excellent teeth.

It's set seven months after Dead Island

So seven months after the incident on Banoi, the US military has put the whole state of California under full quarantine as it's been totally overrun by flesh eating berks.

You'll be strolling the beachfront boardwalk's of Venice Beach, trying you're best not to become human jam fighting both zombies and human military factions.

Expect 8 player multiplayer

There will be seamless drop in, drop out action for up to 8 players, choosing from what's described as "an elite crew of heroes".

With dedicated classes

There will be dedicated classes to choose to play as, with each offering a variety of gameplay: from the action-oriented berserker to the stealthy hunter.

You choose to play to your gaming strengths.

And a deeper skill system

An in-depth skill system allows the player to handcraft their own heroes and weapons, from motorized grinders to electric machetes, it's up to you to decide how you want to dismember these zombies.

Plus loads of violence!

We've been promised more of the visceral, in-your-face melee combat Dead Island is rightly famous for.

PS4 gets a little more...

Gamers getting this on PS4 will have a platform-specific, exclusive 30-minute mission, and access to an early beta for this game due out on PC, PS4 and Xbox One in spring 2015.
