E10 fuel may impact every single driver with 'even worse problems'

Drivers across the country have been warned to buckle up and expect even higher petrol bills due to the new eco-friendly E10 fuel now on sale.

The new fuel - preferred for many newer motors - is a 'greener blend' than the standard E5 version than most drivers are used to.

However E10, which is made with 10 per cent bioethanol, may not be suitable for a lot of cars people are currently driving.

As well as this, Hull Live have reported that an expert has revealed that fuel will prove more expensive for every driver in the country as a result of the new blend.

This is because drivers will have to fill up their cars more often as E10 is less energy-dense than 100 per cent petrol or E5 fuel.

Your car will use more fuel for the same distance if it's filled with E10, which is now highly likely as E10 is now the new standard for UK petrol stations.

It comes as UK fuel prices hit a record high of 143.70 per litre - an increase of 30p in one year.

The new fuel has been rolled out by the government in an attempt to cut environmental damage by reducing the use and reliance on petrol.

Motoring YouTube channel Number 27 's Jack said: "I need to talk to you about something that's pretty shocking I've just found out about E10 fuel.

“And it has absolutely nothing to do with the fact it might damage old classics.

“No, there is a far worse problem with using E10.

“It affects every single car on the road which uses petrol whether it is one of the oldest or the very newest car that’s out.”

He added: "E10 actually causes an increase in fuel consumption for any car that's using it. Ethanol is actually less energy-dense than Unleaded fuel.

“So that means that because it has this lower energy density you have to use more and therefore your fuel consumption in your car will go up.

“You’re not going to lose any power because your car's computer will alter the air-fuel balance to make up for that loss of energy density.

“But your fuel consumption will go up. I really couldn't believe it.”

A study into E10 petrol produced by the Department for Transport has in fact confirmed that drivers will use more fuel under the new E10 grade.

They confirmed fuel economy may drop by up to two per cent using the new compound.
