KOLKATA: Following recommendations by the Bidhannagar Traffic Police, the New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) is further increasing its electronic surveillance across New Town. To add to the existing 535 CCTV cameras, the civic body will instal 300 more at key places across the township, including the community markets and public bicycle sharing stations.
“We have been receiving requests from citizens to increase the CCTV cover as a few law and order incidents occurred recently. We discussed the matter with the police and another 300 CCTV cameras will be installed at different places as recommended to keep 24-hour surveillance. At present, there are 535 cameras across the township,”said an NKDA official.
A number of CCTV cameras will be installed at different angles in the community markets and at cycle sharing stations, to keep check on miscreants.
NKDA will engage an agency to instal the CCTV cameras. The agency will also take up responsibility for the operation and maintenance of these cameras.
Residents are welcoming the move as they feel more CCTV coverage is required with gradual growth of the township. According to residents proper surveillance is needed in a few stretches in Action Area II and III that are not adequately lit and has scarce public transport.
“There is CCTV coverage in Action Area I but more surveillance is required for places in Action Area II and III, as several construction work is going on and more people are settling in,”said Samaresh Das, chairperson of New Town Forum and News (NTFN).
