E-scooter sparks blaze which tore though family home

An e-scooter is being blamed for a fire which tore through a house this weekend.

Crews from two fire stations in Bedfordshire were called to a property in Shefford.

The blaze which fire officials termed a "serious fire" ripped through the house on Saturday afternoon.

Firefighters say the fire was caused by an e-scooter only purchased the previous day - writes Bedfordshire Live.

A Shefford Community Fire Station spokesperson said: "The cause of the fire was the e-scooter bought only yesterday!

"Please only buy e-scooters from reputable dealers or companies and ensure they carry a guarantee and correct safety features."

Praise

The fire service praised the quick-thinking from the home-owners who prevented the fire from spreading by closing their doors behind them.

The spokesperson added: "Please also note the importance of shutting your doors. It could save your life!

"The quick thinking owners of the property shut the door on the way out which in turn prevented the fire and smoke spreading."

Fire officials say most e-scooter fires are caused by battery issues.

Everyone involved in the incident was reported as safe and well.

As well as Shefford Community Fire Station, the incident was attended by firefighters from Bedford Community Fire Station.
