An e-scooter rider has been taken to hospital after he was stabbed in the shoulder during a suspected road rage incident in North Adelaide.

Police said the 20-year-old man was riding south along Jerningham Street just after 9:30pm when he had an altercation with a driver.

Senior Constable Rebecca Stokes said both men exchanged words.

"When the scooter rider approached the driver-side door of the vehicle, the male driver allegedly stabbed him in the shoulder with an unknown object," she said.

The motorist then drove off, leaving the man with a minor stab wound.

He was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital for treatment.

"It sounds like possibly some sort of minor road rage incident," Senior Constable Stokes said.

Police are continuing to investigate, and have asked anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
