
A person riding an e-scooter in southeast London has died in a traffic collision.
The rider, a man in his 20s, was involved in a crash with a bus at around 7.04am on Thursday, January 22, on Southampton Way, Peckham.
Emergency services including ambulance crews, a paramedic in a fast response car, an advanced paramedic, a trauma team and an incident response officer rushed to the scene.
However, the scooter rider sadly died at the scene.
No one has been arrested.
TfL said the collision involved a route 136 bus.
Lorna Murphy, TfL’s Director of Buses, said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the person who was tragically killed following a collision with a bus in Southwark.
“Making London's transport network safer is our top priority and we are working with the bus operator, Stagecoach, to assist the police with their investigation. We have support available for anyone affected by this tragic incident.”
In 2024, there were 1,312 collisions involving e-scooters across the UK. Six people died in those crashes.
A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 7.41am on Thursday to reports of a road traffic collision in Southampton Way, Peckham.
“We sent ambulance crews, a paramedic in a fast response car, an advanced paramedic and an incident response officer to the scene.
“We also dispatched a trauma team in a car from London’s Air Ambulance. Sadly, despite efforts to save his life, a person died at the scene.
“We checked over a second person but they didn’t need to be taken to hospital.”
A spokesperson for the Met Police said: “Around 7.40am on Thursday, January 22, officers attended Southampton Way, Peckham, with the London Ambulance Service, following reports of a collision between an e-scooter and a bus.
"The rider - a man in his 20s - was pronounced dead at the scene.
“His next-of-kin have been informed, and are being supported by specially-trained officers.
“No arrests have been made, and enquiries continue. Anyone who witnessed the incident is urged to call 101."
