Dyson Lightcycle Morph review: versatile intelligent desk lamp with a multitude of uses

After what feels like a very long winter, the clocks have just gone forward.

There will be a grand stretch in the evening, bringing about a big change for our body clocks.

This change is automatically catered for by the Lightcycle Morph lamp from tech innovator Dyson.

As its moniker might suggest, Lightcycle tracks natural daylight.

Smart light tracking enables it to adjust the colour temperature to match the sun's natural light throughout the day.

This unique feature needs a Bluetooth connection with your phone to work and requires you to input the city where you are based.

And if you input your age when setting up, it will adjust the automatic lighting's strength accordingly depending on how old you are.

Futuristic

The 523mm lamp itself is powered by three warm and three cool LEDs and has a minimal, futuristic look, with a combination of metallic silver and glossy white finishes.

The company’s heat pipe tech keeps the LEDs cool even at its brightest settings.

The Morph is the latest in the Lightcycle range – the previous Task model delivered brilliant precision lighting from above.

The newer lamp lives up to its name with its versatility. It can instantly transform a workspace into an area for relaxing.

It differs from its predecessor thanks to an angled double-hinged arm that allows you to adjust the position of the head and rotate it 360 degrees.

This means you can focus the lamp on a spot on your desk when working, turn it to illuminate a particular feature in your living room, or just have indirect light when you want it.

And when you sit the lamp head on the unit's perforated tubular stem, it morphs into a gorgeous soft, ambient light.

Controls

You can manually adjust the colour temperature using the responsive touch controls that veer from an orange-warm 1800 Kelvin to a stark, ultra-white 6,500 Kelvin.

And you can change the brightness levels to suit your mood. Brightness can be turned down as low as four lumens and up to an incredible 850 lumens.

Or you can sit back and enjoy the Auto mode, which takes ambient light into account and adjust the brightness to match.

If you use the Morph’s excellent motion sensor feature, the light turns on when you walk in the room and off when you walk away.

There is also an away mode that enables you to use it as a security light. It will switch on and off at set times to imitate human presence.

All of the above settings can also be adjusted using the free Dyson Link app which also includes three presets: relax, study and precision.

And if you use it in your bedroom, you can disable the motion sensor and configure the light to wake you up gradually.

It’s worth mentioning too that there’s a 5W USB-C port in the stand, which is handy for charging your phone if you don’t have a socket within easy reach.

Also worth noting is the only voice control support comes from Alexa.

Verdict

Lightcycle Morph is available as both a floor-standing model and the desktop unit that I reviewed. The only difference between them is their height.

The super intelligent, WiFi connected, tech controls are all superb, but this is really all about the excellent high quality lighting on board.

It delivers quality, controllable, lighting whatever the time of day or year in four different formats – whether used as a task, feature, ambient or indirect light.

And bear in mind the lamp will last 60 years so it’s a solid investment too.

Pricing

Dyson Lightcycle Morph desk lamp is available in white or silver and costs €549 at Dyson.
