BOSTON _ Sam Dyson allowed five of the seven Boston Red Sox runs in the seventh inning Wednesday, spoiling a quality start by Martin Perez in the Texas Rangers' 9-4 loss at Fenway Park.
Perez allowed one run in six innings and retired the first batter of the seventh before consecutive singles. Dyson, who had an encouraging outing Sunday, entered and failed to retire any of the seven batters he faced.
Boston left-hander Chris Sale failed in his bid for a ninth consecutive 10-strikeout game, having to settle for six. The Rangers got him for four runs on six hits.
The Rangers didn't have their first runner until the fourth, when Delino DeShields started with a walk, he scored two batters later on a sacrifice fly, but the Rangers still didn't have a hit. They took care of that in the third, when Mike Napoli collected for a solo homer and a 2-1 lead. Ryan Rua followed with a double and scored as Joey Gallo followed with single. Shin-Soo Choo added an RBI single in the seventh after DeShields doubled.
Perez was on the verge of his best start of the season after being on the verge of an early slip. After throwing 67 pitches in the first three innings, allowing one run in the third, Perez threw three scoreless innings on 35 pitches. He started the seventh, got the first batter, and then allowed two hits to get the hook. Dyson entered and promptly gave up the game. He faced seven batters and retired none. The Red Sox scored seven runs in the inning, five charged to him. Austin Bibens-Dirkx put out the rally.
Mookie Betts and Dustin Pedroia each had two RBIs and a run scored for the Red Sox.
Rangers DH Jonathan Lucroy's hitting streak ended at 10 games, and Nomar Mazara saw his end at 11 after bouncing into a fielder's choice as a pinch hitter in the ninth.
