Dyson Cool CF1 review: Is this desk fan all style over substance?

Dyson has carved out a very specific section of the household appliance market, making everyday objects ultra hi-tech and uniquely aesthetically pleasing.

It’s a niche that no other brand has come close to competing with, especially when it comes to fans.

Transforming the more unsightly of summer essentials into a sculptural piece that will fit seamlessly among the homes of discerning interior enthusiasts, Dyson has unveiled its Dyson Cool CF1 just in time for the heatwave.

What sets this device apart from the crowd is its bladeless design. This has become a signature of the Dyson collection since it brought the first model of its kind to market in 2009 and calls upon an entirely different airflow technology than its contemporaries.

But how does the cooling compare to bladed alternatives? Can you really get an unrivalled without the typical spinning? I put it to the test.

Tech specs

  • 370 litres of airflow per second
  • Power usage: 30 watts maximum
  • Sound: 29dB
  • 0/15/40/70° oscillation settings
  • 10 levels of fan speed
  • Sleep mode
  • Silencing technology

Set-up

In typical Dyson fashion, there is little to be said for the setup of its fan. Right out of the box, it’s pretty much ready to go. All you need to do is slide the fan onto the stand, twist, and you’re done. Next, just plug it in and switch it on for immediate cooling.

Design

This is where the Dyson Cool CF1 comes into its own. You cannot deny how the desk fan is dinky in its size and attractive in its circular, bladeless look. Far less of an eyesore than other fans on the market, you can display this pride of place in your living room or bedroom. What’s more, you don’t have to worry about children or pets as there is nothing to catch fingers or paws on. Cleaning is a breeze too (pun very much intended).

Functionality

The Dyson Cool CF1 does not disrupt or buffet airflow. It takes a different approach to its cooling technology, harnessing the brand’s trademarked Air Multiplier technology. This encourages the motor to produce 370 litres of airflow per second. It is also a more energy-efficient process, so you need not feel stressed about your electricity bills if you’re looking for all-night cooling.

I feel it is important to note, as is the case with all the other Dyson fans that I have tried in the past, you don’t get the high-powered wind of other fans. The closer you are to the fan, the better; however, it doesn’t feel that cool more than around a metre away - even on the top setting. I do find it quieter - especially when on night mode, as this automatically turns it down and dims the display. For the hottest temperatures - say the odd 30-degree day, you will likely need to call in reinforcements. But for traditional British summertime, when you are looking for a light, comfortable breeze, it works wonders.

There is a mini LCD screen on the front of the fan that details speed (between 1 to 10). The sheer quantity of options in terms of the wind means you can customise the feel to the optimal level, whether you are looking for a slight breeze and comforting white noise, or actual relief from the heat. That being said, for the latter and as mentioned earlier, you will have the best results if you place it immediately next to your bed.

Verdict

Dyson Cool CF1

You cannot deny the aesthetic appeal of Dyson’s Cool CF1. The bladeless, circular silhouette makes it a design feature in the home, especially when compared with other fans on the market that are typically an eyesore.

It has 10 speed settings to customise your cooling needs, harnessing the brand’s trademarked Air Multiplier technology. This encourages the motor to produce 370 litres of airflow per second. It is also a more energy-efficient process, so you need not feel stressed about your electricity bills if you’re looking for all-night cooling.

The closer the fan to the bed, the more impactful the breeze, even on the top setting. The best results for immediate heat relief are to be as close to it as possible.

Honourable mention goes to its energy-efficient nature.
