British wrestling legend Dynamite Kid has died aged 60.

WWE star Tommy Billington passed away on his birthday after battling ill health for a number of years.

Tributes to the star flooded social media, with many claiming Mr Billington "revolutionised" the sport and branding him a legend.

Mr Billington was born in Golborne, Lancashire, and took up wrestling to avoid becoming a coal miner.

He joined the WWE in 1984 alongside his cousin, Davey Boy Smith, forming one of the most popular tag teams of their era, The British Bulldogs.

Davey Boy Smith Jr took to Twitter to pay his condolences on Wednesday.

He said: "It deeply saddens me to announce the passing of Tom Billington the "Dynamite Kid."

"I was really happy and glad I got to see Dynamite one last time last June in the UK. Dynamite was certainly an inspiration to myself and many others and really revolutionised."

Dynamite Kid was considered to be one of wrestling’s most influential in-ring performers because of his distinctive style.

Over the past two decades, Mr Billington was wheelchair-bound because of the leg and back injuries he sustained in the ring.
