CHICAGO — The Chicago Blackhawks extended their winning streak under interim coach Derek King to three games with a 2-1 victory against the Arizona Coyotes on Friday night at the United Center.
Alex DeBrincat scored off Patrick Kane’s feed in the second period, and Dylan Strome sealed it with his first goal of the season. The Hawks improved to 4-9-2 and have 10 points.
The first period passed by without a score, but five minutes into the second the Blackhawks pulled Marc-André Fleury for a sixth attacker on a delayed penalty.
Kane brought the puck behind the net, built a head of steam through the neutral zone, weaved through defenders as he came up the right side and backhanded a cross-ice pass to DeBrincat for a one-timer at the 5:26 mark.
The Coyotes challenged for missed game stoppage, likely because they illegally touched the puck on a delayed penalty and thus play should’ve been stopped, but the goal was upheld.
In the third, Andrew Ladd fired a shot past Fleury as he was being screened, tying the game just 1:41 into the period. Ladd last scored against his former team Dec. 15, 2016, with the New York Islanders.
Dominik Kubalík couldn’t punch it in on back-to-back chances during a third-period power play. A great breakaway chance hit the crossbar, and Scott Wedgewood stopped Kubalík’s backhander 49 seconds later.
Kirby Dach took a good shot in the third from defenseman Kyle Capobianco, playing his first game of the season, and Dach held his mouth before skating off.
Dach didn’t return until 5 1/2 minutes were left in the game, sitting out 10 minutes, so Ryan Carpenter replaced him in the bumper role on the power play midway through the third, when Strome drew a tripping penalty.
Strome one-timed Kane’s second assist from the slot 9:26 into the third.
The Hawks killed off Seth Jones’ late hooking penalty to preserve the win. Fleury made 22 saves.
