Dylan Alcott wins Australian Open for seventh straight time with thumping win over Sam Schroder

Dylan Alcott is Australian Open champion for the seventh straight time thanks to a barnstorming straight-sets win over Dutchman Sam Schroder.

Alcott was never threatened in his 6-1, 6-0 win, which was played on Margaret Court Arena after the Rafael Nadal-Stefanos Tsitsipas quarter-final went to five sets on Rod Laver Arena.

Alcott profusely thanked organisers for putting on the tournament in trying circumstances.

"I feel very lucky to be doing my job right now, even though it's 12:45am," he said of the late start.

"But I'll play at 3:00am in the carpark to be honest because it's a privilege to come out here every time and get an opportunity to play the Australian Open."

Unlike Tsitsipas's victory on centre court, which took more than four hours, Alcott took care of business in a hurry.

He was surprisingly broken in the first game of the match, but tore through the first set in 25 minutes and won 12 straight game en route to the title.

His charge to his 12th major singles title was briefly halted by a seven-deuce game at 0-4 in the second set, but he managed to convert his 17th break point of the night, before serving out the match.

The 30-year-old's win came two days after he and Heath Davidson wrapped up the quad doubles title for the fourth straight year.
