Dylan Alcott to retire after 2022 Australian Open

Dylan Alcott has announced he'll retire after the next Australian Open

Dylan Alcott will retire from tennis after the Australian Open in January, where he will be aiming to win an eighth-successive title.

Alcott, 30, is the most successful men's quad tennis player of all time, winning 15 grand slam singles titles and eight doubles titles.

"I feel like I've done everything I need to do on the tennis court," Alcott said at a press conference.

"It's been an incredible ride and I think the time has come to move onto other things that I do.

"In saying that, I'm going to train my arse off for the next two months and try and go out on a high."

An outspoken advocate for the rights of people living with disability, Alcott has used his success to highlight multiple issues throughout his career, including mental health issues.

After completing the Golden Slam at this year's US Open, Alcott said tennis had saved his life.

"I used to hate myself so much. I hated my disability. I didn't even want to be here any more.

"Now I've become the only male ever in any form of tennis to win the Golden Slam, which is pretty cool."

He started playing tennis aged 16, but earned his first international success as part of the Australian wheelchair basketball team, the Rollers.

He won two Paralympic medals with the Rollers, a gold in 2008 in Beijing and a silver at the 2012 Games in London.

He then turned his attention back to quad tennis, a sport her first played as a teenager, with immediate success.

Alcott won the 2015 Australian Open, the first of seven successive quad singles titles at Melbourne Park.

He also won the US Open in 2015, but had to wait into 2019 to find success at the French Open — the first of a hat-trick of titles at Roland Garros — and Wimbledon, where he has two titles.

Since his debut grand slam victory at the 2015 Australian Open, only three majors have been won by anyone other than Alcott.

Alcott claimed his second and third Paralympic Gold medals in Rio in the quad singles and the doubles with fellow Aussie Heath Davidson.

He retained his Paralympic singles title in Tokyo as part of a historic Golden Slam in 2021, where he won all four grand slam singles titles as well as Paralympic gold.

Alcott completed that Golden Slam at Flushing Meadows, defeating Dutchman Niels Vink in straight sets 7-5, 6-2.

However, he said there was "no way" he could finish his career at Flushing Meadows.

"The Australian Open changed my life … I owe it everything and what better way to finish than in my home city in front of big, big crowds."
