I really liked Dying Light when it came out on PC in 2015. Just writing about it makes me want to fire the game back up.
It’s a really creative open-world zombie game with a fun story, interesting characters and parkour mechanics that make moving through the Turkish city of Harran fast, fluid and fun. The day/night cycle meant that zombies were a threat in the day and a true nightmare when the sun went down.
In any case, while there’s a sequel in the works (and I will be addressing that in another post because it looks awesome) there’s also a spinoff that just launched into Early Access on Steam.

Dying Light: Bad Blood is a 12-person battle royale game that takes the mechanics and setting of Dying Light, replete with fearsome zombies and cool parkour mechanics, and turns it into a PvPvE mode where 12 players enter and only one survives. You do that by eliminating other players and making it to the evac helicopter, though the zombies can help or hinder along the way.
Here’s the trailer:
Looks pretty sweet. I’ve mentioned how much I like the zombies in Call of Duty’s Blackout battle royale mode. This amps the number of undead up to eleven. I also like that this at least appears to focus primarily on melee and ad hoc weapons rather than a full arsenal of guns. We have plenty of gun-forward battle royale games already.
You can join the Early Access period for $20 which developer Techland is referring to as a Founder’s Pack. The game itself, when it launches as a full release, will be free-to-play with micro-transactions. I’m hoping to dip my toes into the game in the coming days and report back, but I assume it’s still rather rough around the edges as Early Access games tend to be, especially right at launch.

More on this and on Dying Light 2 soon. Thanks for reading!
