Dying firefighter with cancer demands health screenings to protect hero colleagues

A dying firefighter is battling to secure health screening for colleagues.

Martin Green was diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer after 30 years’ service with the London Fire Brigade.

The retired dad-of-three, 63, who is in the last year of his life, said the disease was caused by the career he adored.

But added: “You don’t expect to pay the ultimate price.”

He is receiving palliative care and also wants the Government to pay out compensation to firefighters who are sick.

Martin said: “I’ve lost dozens of friends in the fire service.

“But it’s not just from cancer, it is strokes and heart attacks too.”

He told of his anger after the Mirror yesterday revealed 12 firefighters at the Grenfell Tower blaze have cancer after being exposed to contaminants.

The tragedy in Kensington, West London, claimed the lives of 72 residents in 2017.

Martin, of Shepperton, Surrey, said the worst part of his diagnosis in 2018 was telling his then 12-year-old girl, Tabby.

His petition for payouts for firefighters has had more than 100,000 signatures
