Dying dad-of-five marries love of his life thanks to kindness of strangers

A dying dad whose runny nose and upset tummy turned out to be terminal cancer has married his partner in a dream wedding ceremony.

Garry Holmes, 49, and Kirsty Burroughs, 47, tied the knot in front of family and friends on Friday after kind-hearted strangers donated thousands of pounds to make it happen.

The couple's world was rocked when the dad-of-five was diagnosed him with incurable cancer.

It spurred on the pair to finally get hitched - and the day was exactly as they had hoped, reports Derbyshire Live.

Kirsty said: "All Garry wanted was to get married and it is all I wanted too."

Garry had been vomiting and suffering with a runny nose.

When his symptoms got worse, he went to the doctors and was told he had a tumour in his oesophagus which has spread to his liver.

The couple, who have been together for almost 25 years, are determined to make the most of the time he has left - and top of his bucket list was to get married.

With time ticking, thoughtful friends set up a fundraising page and the couple were inundated with cash donations and offers to help their big day come true.

In front of friends, family and their five children, Dallon, 22, Oliver, 19, Sam, 15, George, 14, Lauren, 11, they said their vows in a moving ceremony.

Kirsty said previously: "We have been in a weird bubble since we got the news but we have to stay strong for the kids.

"It feels like my whole world has sunk.

"The one thing I am looking forward to is becoming Mrs Holmes. I can’t wait."

Although the couple wanted to get married more than anything, they knew that with Christmas around the corner and the fact that they had to act so quickly, they were concerned they might not have been able to afford their dream day.

But thanks to the generosity of strangers, they have had a dream day to remember.

"People have been so kind and it has really helped with everything that has been going on. We have been blown away," said Kirsty.

"People have literally helped with everything. Decorating the venue, the wedding dress, photography. Without their kindness this wedding could not have happened.

"This means so much to Garry, myself and the kids, and we are so grateful."

The pair, said their "I do’s" and exchanged vows at the Riverside Hotel in Branston, on Friday.

The fundraising page for Garry currently has £3,087 in donations, with well wishers donating whatever they could to help the family make precious memories.
