Dwyane Wade advice to NBA Draft prospects speaks volumes about challenge they'll face

NBA legend Dwyane Wade has urged incoming rookies to surround themselves with someone who understands finances to ensure they create generational wealth.

Wade was selected fifth overall in the 2003 NBA Draft by the Miami Heat. He was selected after the likes of LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony and Chris Bosh as the class from 20 years ago stands as one of the deepest and most talented in league history.

Wade spent the majority of his 16-year career with the Heat, winning three championships in 2006, 2012, and 2013. He left the franchise in 2016, bouncing around the Chicago Bulls and Cleveland Cavaliers before he returned to Miami for a final swan song ahead of his 2019 retirement.

Ahead of the 2023 NBA Draft on Thursday night, Wade has called on prospects to ensure they are ready to properly deal with the wealth that comes with making it in the league. They should listen, too - the 41-year-old has an estimated net worth of $170million due to endorsements and investments.

“Try to get you somebody in your life that really knows finances,” Wade told TMZ when asked what he would tell himself ahead of his own draft day experience. “Somebody who, hopefully, you can build a relationship with.

“Hopefully, you can build a trust with eventually. But also learn - learn everything you can about finances.”

Wade acknowledged it's not all about business; draft day is a special moment in a young athlete’s life. It’s the culmination of years of hard work and dedication to their craft, so the Heat icon told prospects to enjoy the occasion.

“Take in the moment, it goes fast,” Wade added. “You get one Draft so enjoy it all - take videos and pictures.”

Much of the pre-draft buildup has surrounded French phenom Victor Wembanyama, whose unique blend of size and technique sets him up as a generational prospect. He is the surefire No. 1 overall pick to the San Antonio Spurs, while Alabama’s Brandon Miller and Scoot Henderson of G League Ignite are expected to round out the top three.
