We’ve said all along that this would be the year former Ohio State quarterback Dwyane Haskins gets it all together. When he was drafted as the No. 15 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, the situation he came into was one of learning.
Consider that learning over.
That’s because Washington announced Wednesday that Haskins will be the starter for game one. This comes after former All-Pro Alex Smith was just approved to practice again. That in combination with a new head coach, Ron Rivera, had many feeling that Haskins’ status was up in the air.
That may still be the case, but it should be clear based on the announcement Wednesday, that Haksins will be given the opportunity to become that face of the franchise some thought he would be when he was drafted. At least initially.

While this is good news, Haskins will need to show that he’s more than capable of making plays and entrusting the offense to him on a consistent basis. He clearly had some growing pains last year, but once he was inserted as the starter and had a few games under his belt, the former Heisman finalist started to show signs of being the answer under center late in the year before going down with injury.
Alas, if there ends up being no football for Ohio State and the Big Ten this fall, at least we can watch the journey of Haskins and other former Buckeyes in the NFL.
Haskins and the Washington Football Team will open up on Sunday, September 13 at home vs. the Eagles.
