DWP: Six million people will get a £150 cost of living disability benefits payment in September and October

Around six million people claiming disability benefits will be paid a £150 cost of living payment next month.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) says the payment is to help with the rising cost of living. Energy bills alone are set to increase by more than £1,500 this autumn.

The payments will be made from September 2022, the DWP confirms. It expects most who are eligible to be paid by the middle of October.

Minister for Disabled People, Health and Work Chloe Smith said:"We know disabled people can face additional costs, which is why we are acting to help reduce the financial pressures on the most vulnerable.

"This £150 disability payment is on top of the £1,200 most low-income benefit claimants will also receive and alongside wider support targeted at disabled people, including help with transport and prescription costs.

We know it’s a worrying time for some people and I’d urge them to check they are getting all the support on offer by searching Help for Households."

Ms Smith's £1,200 calculation combines the £ 650 cost of living payment for those in receipt of benefits like Universal Credit, the £400 energy discount for all households and another £150 for those living in properties within the A-D Council Tax bands in England.
