DWP fix Universal Credit loophole which means thousands will get more money

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has fixed a Universal Credit loophole which was branded 'unfair' and cost people thousands of pounds, reports The Mirror.

More than 85,000 people who were claiming Universal Credit will see the payments they receive increase in November as a result.

From Monday, November 16, claimants will now not be penalised following their payment if they are paid by their employer twice in one month.

However prior to this, those who are paid twice in the same month by their employer were deemed to be 'over-earning' according to DWP's system and their following payment was reduced as a result.

After four single mums won a case at the Court of Appeal regarding this flaw, the DWP was ordered to fix the loophole and new rules will now come into force next month.

This now means the benefits system will register just one payment during every assessment period which in theory would stop anyone losing it.

This will only apply to those who are paid monthly and not employees who are paid weekly or fortnightly.

Universal Credit claimants who will be impacted by this do not need to do anything extra and will benefit those workers who are paid early due over the festive period due to bank holidays.

The changes are introduced on Monday, November 15.
