DWP delay on state pension payments means hundreds waiting for cash

It has been reported that thousands of pensioners in the UK are waiting to receive their State Pension payments despite reaching retirement age.

Delays have meant some people who are newly retired have been caught up in a backlog.

While a 'catch-up' programme by the Department or Work and Pensions (DWP) means payments to those turning 66 are now being made, the BBC reports some 4,900 people have yet to be processed.

It is understood the DWP blames the pandemic, staffing problems and the need to gather extra information from claimants for the delays.

Guy Opperman, pensions and financial inclusion minister told MPs that hundreds of staff members were being redeployed to help with the issue.

A spokesperson for the DWP told the BBC: "We are sorry that some new customers have faced delays receiving their State Pension.

"We have now issued all outstanding payments and are in contact with those customers where more information is required in order to complete processing."
