DWP and HMRC confirm bank holiday payment date changes including Universal Credit, PIP and State Pension

People receiving certain benefits have been advised by DWP and HMRC that they may receive their payments on a different date as the third and final bank holiday of May approaches.

The spring bank holiday falls on Monday, May 29 this year, meaning that most payments due on this date, including State Pension, Universal Credit, Personal Independence Payment (PIP) and Child Benefit, will be paid early on Friday, May 26 instead. DWP confirmed the changes in its latest bulletin, explaining that payments are being made early so that anyone with any payment or benefit queries can contact the relevant department if needed before the long weekend, the Daily Record reports.

DWP advised: "On Monday 29 May, Jobcentre Plus offices and phone lines are closed. To make sure people get their payment on a day when Jobcentre Plus offices are open, some payments will be paid early. If the expected payment date is Monday 29 May, benefits will be paid on Friday 26 May."

Benefits are usually paid on the last working day beforehand in the event that their payment date falls on a weekend or bank holiday. For anyone expecting their money on Monday 29, the early payment will mean that they will have to make their cash stretch over an extra weekend, so it's important to be aware of the changes and plan accordingly.

After this month, there are just three more bank holidays in England and Wales in 2023: the summer bank holiday on August 28, followed by Christmas Day and Boxing Day in December. Below is the full list of benefits that will be paid on the earlier date before the bank holiday at the end of May, as confirmed by DWP and HMRC:
