DWP and HMRC confirm bank holiday benefit changes

Some changes have been made to benefits payments for the upcoming bank holidays.

May will see three bank holidays which are set to fall on May 1 for May Day, May 8 for the King's Coronation and May 29 for Spring. As a result, people are being urged to take note of any changes for scheduled payments including State Pension, Universal Credit and Carer’s Allowance.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed scheduled payments which are due on the May Day bank holiday next Monday will land in bank accounts this Friday, April 28. Payments from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) such as Child Benefit and Tax Credits will also arrive early, DWP confirmed.

The DWP also said that Jobcentre Plus opening times are different on May 1 and May 8 as on both of these days, offices and phone lines will be closed, meaning payments due on May 8 will arrive on May 5, the Daily Record reports.

The bank holiday immediately after the Coronation of King Charles III on Saturday, May 6, has been set aside for volunteering and is being billed as ‘the big help out’. It has been organised by The Together Coalition and partners The Scouts, the Royal Voluntary Service and faith groups from across the UK.

It aims to highlight the positive impact volunteering has on communities. Buckingham Palace said in tribute to the King's public service, the big help out ‘will encourage people to try volunteering for themselves and join the work being undertaken to support their local areas’.
