Dwight Yorke makes Manchester United plea ahead of busy festive period

Ex-Manchester United forward Dwight Yorke believes there should be no need to rest the side's best players, with the Reds aiming to climb back into the top four of the festive period.

United haven't lost since departing with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last month and have since appointed Ralf Rangnick on an interim basis until the end of the season.

The Reds have a favourable fixture list ahead of the busy Christmas and New Year spell, and start with a trip to strugglers Norwich City on Saturday evening.

Rangnick 's side then face Brentford, Brighton, Newcastle and Burnley to end the domestic year, with 50-year-old Yorke insisting the Reds must start their strongest XI throughout.

"The league table doesn't lie," Yorke told The Athletic.

"Some of the best players should not be rested. You start your best players, whether you're in a schoolboy team or a Premier League team.

''Don't complicate it, start Cristiano Ronaldo. United would be in an even worse position without him. He's 36 but he's a freak; he's not like a normal 36-year-old player."

With the side now safely through to the next phase of this season's UEFA Champions League, after finishing top of Group F, the Reds could face one of PSG, Atletico Madrid, Sporting, Inter, Benfica, or Red Bull Salzburg in the last 16.

Yorke, however, also believes there is such thing as a hierarchy within the current dressing room, adding that those who are chosen to put on a red shirt, must do more for the good of the team.

"It's the same with Rashford," Yorke added.

"He has the 'wow' factor. He's a United fan, he's from Manchester. That combination of talent and his background is priceless. He's not good in the air but he can improve.

"There's another thing. Players know who is the best in the team — they're not stupid. There's a rank in every dressing room and always will be. But those players selected are also not performing as well as they should."
