Dwight Yorke admission highlights Manchester United's defensive plight

Former Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke has admitted that he would have loved to play alongside Andy Cole against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's current defence.

United's back-line has attracted vast criticism this season, with the scrutiny reaching boiling point after the disastrous performance in the 6-1 defeat to Tottenham on Sunday.

That has left United in a difficult position ahead of the first international break of the season, with the club picking up just three points from the opening three matches.

United's defensive frailties have been well documented and Yorke could not help to admit that he would have been 'chomping at the bit' to face off against the current crop of players.

“We never feared playing any defenders. If we had that fear factor then we wouldn’t be talking about it. We would have had fun, I’m sure me and Coley would’ve had fun," he told Sky Sports News.

"We’re laughing about it, but it’s clearly a very serious matter where United are concerned, we are at the moment, looking from the outside, we would be chomping at the bit if we had an opportunity to play against these guys.

"They’ve done fantastically well, but I think everyone realises we need more defensive qualities or another additional defender as well as a midfielder.

"There’s so much going on at the football club that it is so hard to put your finger on a particular moment, there’s just so much happening.”
