Dwight Gayle says it's vital that Newcastle United get a good pre-season ahead of new season

Dwight Gayle has promised Newcastle United fans that the players will be raring to go for the 2020-21 campaign.

The forward finished the Premier League season in good form scoring against Liverpool on the final day of the season to take his tally up to four goals since lockdown - and has vowed not to make the most of his break.

Gayle said: "We only have a couple of weeks off and we are not going to down tools too much. We'll just have a little break and then we'll back training and ready to go again.

"It was a frustrating end to the season but we go into the break and we will be ready to start again.

"It's been a great few weeks for myself but it's going to be vital that we get a good pre-season."

Gayle scored the opener against Liverpool but the Premier League champions ran out 3-1 winners in front of an empty St James' Park due to COVID-19.

While it is highly unlikely fans will be allowed back into stadiums by the time the season kicks off on September 12th, Gayle is keeping his fingers crossed that supporters will return, safely, sooner rather later.

"Hopefully the fans are back to cheer us on because we're missing them.

"They're the 12th man for us and we miss them for game like this when they get behind us and give us that extra urge.

"We thank them for the first 3/4's of the season - hopefully they can help us next season."
