Dwight Gayle on Championship side's 'wish list' as Newcastle United striker weighs up options

Dwight Gayle tops the wish list of Chris Wilder - if the former Sheffield United boss gets the job at West Brom.

Wilder was said to be close to signing up as the Baggies boss late last week but as of yet there has been no confirmation - and now, Roy Hodgson has been linked with a return.

Reports in the Sunday Mirror claim that if Wilder did get the job, he would turn to Gayle as one of his top summer targets.

Newcastle head coach Steve Bruce has repeatedly stated what a fan of Gayle he is but only afforded him 503 minutes of Premier League football last season - although has reportedly offered him a new deal.

If Gayle refuses, it means he would leave on a free transfer in the summer, and given his stock at West Brom remains high after hitting 24 goals while on loan there back in 2018-19, a return would be welcomed by the fans.

Bruce is in the market for a new forward himself - the over-reliance on Callum Wilson clear when the England international missed weeks through injury.

However, with the transfer budget tight, there's a belief from some that keeping Gayle would make more sense than to let him go and try to replace him with someone of the same quality - who would undoubtedly arrive for a premium.
